SOUTH
CAROLINA SECESSION
Meaning
Clusters
South Carolina wanted
to unify the South
against abolitionist demands.
After Lincoln won
the election of 1860
they saw an opportunity.
South Carolina
seceded from the Union
as soon as the election
became certain.
By February 1
of the following year
six more Southern states
seceded from the union.
On February 7
the seven states adopted
a provisional constitution
for the Confederate
States of America.
On March 4
The United States
swore in Abraham Lincoln
as it’s 16th president.
He refused
to recognize the secession
in his inaugural address.
He considered it
“legally void.”
He asked the South
to restore the bonds
of union.
On April 12
guns opened fire
on federal troops stationed
at Fort Sumter
in South Carolina.
A Civil War began.
