CD 54 - The Military Reconstruction Act

THE MILITARY RECONSTRUCTION ACT

Meaning Clusters

By June 1868
the Union readmitted

Arkansas, Louisiana,
North and South Carolina,

Georgia, Alabama

and Florida.

Most governors, senators

and representatives appointed

in the reconstructed states

came from the North.

These “carpetbaggers”
went South after the war
to take advantage

of the political situation.

They often allied

with newly freed

African Americans.

African Americans gained

a majority of the seats

in the South Carolina

and Louisiana legislatures.

In 1870

the Union readmitted

Mississippi, Texas

and Virginia.

Many Southern whites
felt threatened

by the loss of political

and social dominance.

They prevented blacks

from gaining equality

by illegal means.

Racially motivated violence

became more frequent.

Congress passed

an Enforcement Act.

It severely punished

anyone who attempted

to deprive black freedmen

of their civil rights.
