he attended a play
at Ford’s Theater.
A disgruntled actor
named John Wilkes Booth
assassinated the president.
Booth reportedly yelled
“Sic semper tyrannis.”
The Latin phrase means
“Thus always to tyrants”
and is Virginia’s state motto.
Then he tripped
on an American flag
and broke his leg.
Booth somehow
managed to escape.
Lincoln died
the next morning.
Authorities killed Booth
during a shootout
a few days later
in the Virginia countryside.
They captured
and later executed
his accomplices.
